Rouses Point NY

It was a late start (as usual) getting out of Burlington but there was some last minute shopping that needed to be done. Once we were underway in the widest part of the lake, the breeze stopped and we were on a giant mirror. Our first stop was Valcour Island to visit the historical area where Benedict Arnold and some of America's first Navy just about got wiped out by the British in 1776. After we circumnavigated the island we anchored in a cove on the north end. We met some nice Canadians on their sailboat and asked them about the trails on the island. The first thing they said was dont take your dogs because the island is infested with ticks. That put a huge Kibosh on our plans so we putted around the shores in the zodiac and let the dogs out on one beach. When we got back to the boat it was getting very hot so I went for an afternoon swim. The water was 64F and so nice I actually got some exercise scrubbing the bottom of the boat with my brush. The dogs even went swimming (only slight force used), and had a mini bath. After 30 minutes I decided to get out as I was getting fried from the sun. Our new acquaintance from the sailboat swam over and talked to us for a long time before swimming back. I really wanted to stay anchored in the cove but the forecast was for high winds and big waves and I could not get the anchor to set on a sandy bottom in 6 feet of water! I could see the anchor sliding along and that was not going to work in the storm that was supposed to hit at midnight, so....we cruised all the way to the north end of the lake to Rouses Point. We found a great marina and met up with some loopers we had met in Burlington. Another couple heard about us being from Alaska and asked where we lived. When I said Palmer they said they had lived in Palmer. They had lived in Sky Ranch for several years and we both knew all the same neighbors! What a small world! Once we got settled in, it was time to explore the town and find food (aka ice cream). We had some great calzones, gyros, and pizza at Gino's. In fact we met Gino after dinner and thanked him for a great meal. Although we were stuffed, we couldn't pass up the "IC" that was conveniently located one window down. After the short walk back to the marina, we met up with more folks on the loop and shared some fun boat stories. Now that we are safe and snug in the marina, let the storm blow! It will give me an excuse to sleep in......until 7a?
