North to Canada
The storm finally hit about 2am Friday and the wind was howling as forecast. The rain pounded the boat and it was a good day to stay inside and do some reading. We also had lots of time to double check our next routing which we not that easy since everything on the charts is in French. Once the rain stopped we walked down the busy street to the local laundromat and spent a couple boring hours watching clothes go round and round. After reading the note that management placed throughout the facility, we hoped we had selected clean machines. When we got back to the boat the wind was gusting to 40 knots and I learned that a large sailboat had broke from it's permanent mooring line and was blown ashore into the rock breakwater. It was damaged and leaking but the harbor crew managed to tow it back out and tie it to another buoy. The lake was solid frothing whitecaps and the forecast was for 5 foot seas so I am glad we were at the marina and not anchored out. The dogs got some play time rolling in the grass and barking at every dog that came by. I switched out the Alaska flag for the Canadian courtesy flag on the bow so we are properly showing colors to cross the border. I studied some French words but can only pronounce them well enough to embarrass myself. We will be in Canada for a few weeks before crossing Lake Ontario back into New York. The blog and our communication may be intermittent unless we have WiFi. We will have phone and possibly texting although it didn't work well driving through Canada last month.
The forecast is for 88F this weekend! After the rain the humidity is going to be painful. The wind is still blowing 20kts and the seas are still pounding but we are only 1/2 mile from the river so off to Canada we go! Au revoir.
